PRS for Music Deals With Spotify, Bashes YouTube
PRS for Music, a collecting society for UK songwriters, composers and music publishers, confirmed yesterday that it agreed “commercial terms” with music streaming service Spotify. Court Webcasts, Securing Your Internet Privacy
As we’ve reported, the Recording Industry opposes court webcasts of the file sharing lawsuit against Boston University student, Joel Tenenbaum. However, defense lawyer Charles R. Nesson told the US Court of appeals that an online webcast of the proceedings would be “an opportunity for the world to see what the recording industry is doing to [Joel].”
The trial is being considered a precedent for all piracy lawsuits, and could set the scenario for future prosecution of file sharers. Also, researchers at Northwestern University have found a new threat to privacy in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. Indie Record Stores at Risk
Independent record stores are declining in numbers. The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) reports that just 300 indie record stores remain in the entire United Kingdom, down from over 1000 a decade ago.
The industry shift to online music consumption has also plagued major retailers, as we reported in January, but stores are trying to fight back with the second annual Record Store Day on April 18, when more than 1000 stores worldwide will offer in-store events and performances. Read more...

Songs For Pennies or Stream for Free?
With all the music streaming and download services available, it’s difficult to decide which one to use. iTunes recently introduced their tiered pricing, but Amazon is selling top-tier songs at a cheaper price. Even though iTunes controls the download market, fans looking to buy music might be enticed by Amazon’s price drop.
On the free streaming front, Spotify released libspotify Tuesday night, which allows third-party developers to write applications for the service, and YouTube, though reported to have blocked “premium” videos in the UK and Germany, still provides most music for free, through user-made videos. Kill Rock Stars Signs Distribution Deal With Redeye
Indie labels are far from extinction, a fact that was illustrated today by the deal between northwest indie label Kill Rock Stars (KRS), and indie distributor Redeye.
