Kuduro and Buraka Som Sistema: Interview With Olivier Guiot

Progressive Kuduro has expanded rapidly throughout Europe and the US with the arrival of Buraka Som Sistema on the music scene – a group that mixes African music with techno and house electronica for the sole purpose of moving bodies on the dance floor. They made an appearance at Coachella this year, and will be at Pukkelpop in Belgium and Bestival in the UK.

Olivier Guiot, a Belgian sociologist from the Human and Social Science Faculty in Lisbon, is studying Kuduro for his masters thesis, and was gracious enough to chat with me about the origins of Kuduro, and the social impact of the cultural movement that is associated with the style of music. That’s the intro for the upcoming Beatles: Rock Band game, by Passion Pictures revealed at the E3 Microsoft press conference. The animated music video looks like it has drawn influence from several different styles. I see some of Terry Gilliam’s Monty Python referenced, and Passion Pictures has been responsible for much of the visuals of the animated rock band Gorillaz.

Another trailer, for the Brutal Legend game featuring Jack Black, was released at E3, and it showed the four rock gods that will appear throughout the game. Guess who they are: Continue reading...

Musicians In Favor Of Pirate Bay

Swedish music group Advance Patrol was referenced by prosecutors in the Pirate Bay trial, and they aren’t happy about it: Gonza from Advance Patrol explains:

We never asked to be plaintiffs in this case. They used us as scapegoats in a fight in which we don’t wish to participate. We refuse to be used in a war against our fans.

Advance Patrol argues that file sharers are the most dedicated fans of their music, not criminals, and they’ve released their latest album, El Futuro, as a free torrent on Pirate Bay. Continue reading...
